Overview |
What is an independent School?Independent schools are governed by their boards of trustees who make sure that schools develop a high quality educational experience that is consistent with their particular mission. Independent schools set high academic standards; they encourage excellence; they motivate students to be enthusiastic and creative about learning. They are also committed to making sure each student reaches his or her potential in an environment that fosters teamwork and socialization with others. Independent schools work hard to create communities that are close-knit. Their small class size enables teachers to develop a full understanding of how each student learns, what interests them and motivates them to do their best. Independent school teachers speak about "educating the whole child". They make sure that their students are well rounded by extending their education beyond the classroom, to the athletic field and to various co-curricular activities that students are encouraged to join. In these settings students encounter teachers and coaches who are well trained and care deeply about their personal and academic development. Independent schools also see their role as developing competent and caring leaders for the global society that we are entering in the twenty-first century. They use their financial aid to select students from diverse backgrounds, both economic and social, and they also provide their students with opportunities to think critically and act humanely. They stress the importance of civility and ethics as essential traits in decision-making and in relationships with others. If these qualities are of interest to you, then the next step is to find the right independent school for your child. Go to PCIS Schools. |
